In this work Scarpa brings together all of his remarkable abilities; indeed, he demonstrates how it is possible to work creatively within a building that already possesses a complex history. We are presented with a magnificent example of his highly personal architectural language, as well as of his extraordinary eye for detail and his mastery in the use of materials. This space, which also houses a museum display that is as radical and timeless today as it was on the day of its inauguration in 1964, has since then remained a constant source of inspiration for museum design. Scarpa achieves his most extraordinary result, where all of these themes converge, in the remarkable display of the equestrian statue of Cangrande, probably the most important installation ever conceived for a single work of art.

In addition to analysing Scarpa’s work in detail as it has come down to us today, this book also presents the reader with the complex history of the building, together with the sequence of Scarpa’s eloquent drawings, bearing witness to a brilliant curiosity and a holistic approach to design, in which art and architecture prove to be entirely complementary.

The surveys of the entire building carried out by Richard Murphy in 1986, his interviews with several of Scarpa’s collaborators, including the craftsmen, and his studies of Scarpa’s drawings led to the production of three exhibitions and the publication of a book in 1990. However, Carlo Scarpa and Castelvecchio Revisited differs in many respects from the earlier publication. It is not a second edition, nor is it an entirely new analysis; rather, it is the culmination of a process which began with the publication, in 1990, of a 198-page book and has resulted in a larger-format volume of 384 pages. Compared with the first book, the new volume contains twice as many of Scarpa’s drawings, this time reproduced in colour and accompanied by a reference system that guides the reader through the analysis of the various details. Large sections of the accompanying text have been rewritten and expanded, and two new chapters have been added. Perhaps the most significant aspect, however, is the greater number of photographs of the building throughout the different stages of its complex history, together with the magnificent colour photographs by Peter Guthrie and his assistant Matthew Hyndman.

[14749

post-67775","product","type-product","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","product_cat-architecture","first","instock","sale","taxable","shipping-taxable","purchasable","product-type-simple
["GET
