he aim of this book involves reflecting on Álvaro Siza’s Design Principles, based on his own words and on his extensive designed and built oeuvre. In order to respect the authenticity of Siza’s thinking, a selection of fragments (here understood as aphorisms) are taken from his published texts, interviews and design reports. The book is organized into two interrelated sections: the first on Álvaro Siza’s fundamental principles as guidelines that apply to the author’s oeuvre; the second on the design principles of the Ocean Swimming Pool, in particular. This reveals how the general principles conveyed in the book’s first part are applicable to the circumstance of the singular work, guided by a common conceptual and methodological horizon. Without doctrinal pretensions, this book aims to bring together a more comprehensive reflection on Álvaro Siza’s theory and method, highlighting the intimate relationship between writing and design, anchored in an extraordinary clarity and coherence of thought. His written work endows density on his built work, both inseparable dimensions of continuous research and profound sensitivity towards observing and transforming reality.
