Editorial Project New/Old: A Method for Analysing the Process of Intervention in the Built Environment

The current context, marked by an unprecedented consumption of resources, calls for more sustainable approaches to intervention in the built environment, including the reuse of existing buildings. This field of practice has become increasingly significant within the architectural profession, as noted by Álvaro Siza:

“In buildings, cities, or territories that have always been shaped by human presence, the architecture of the coming years will be characterised by the practice of rehabilitation.” (1983, p. 3)

The book New/Old. Eduardo Souto de Moura: Works forms part of an editorial project dedicated to the theme of contemporary intervention in the built environment, with the aim of providing a pedagogical tool for both architectural education and professional practice.

As Eduardo Souto de Moura states:

“As an architect, I do not believe it is appropriate to distinguish between an intervention in a historic building and a new construction. A new building rarely, if ever, starts from scratch: there is always a pre-existing condition, there are always places, sites, an accumulated ‘heritage’. The question that must therefore always be asked is: ‘How do we build heritage?’” (2023, p. 100)
